In short: After a serious crash ended his dreams of professional cycling, a young Paul Smith stumbled into the world of art and tailoring. From a tiny twelve-foot shop in Nottingham, he built a global luxury brand defined by classic silhouettes and his signature, vibrant multicoloured stripes.

Born in 1946 in Beeston, Nottinghamshire, Paul Smith left school at 15 without formal qualifications. His path shifted dramatically at 17 when a severe cycling accident left him hospitalized for three months. During his recovery, he befriended students from a local art school, sparking an interest in graphic design and fashion that would define his career. He eventually managed a clothing start-up for six years before taking tailoring classes and working with the prestigious Savile Row firm Lincroft Kilgour.

In 1970, Smith opened his first shop in Nottingham, a space measuring less than 15 square metres. Initially operating only on Fridays and Saturdays, he balanced the business with freelance work and buying for the London retailer Browns. By 1976, he debuted his first menswear collection in Paris, establishing a reputation for 'classic with a twist' designs. His brand grew rapidly, expanding into womenswear in 1993 and childrenswear in 2010, while maintaining a distinct identity through his trademark pinstripes and colourful patterns.

Beyond clothing, Smith has applied his aesthetic to an eclectic range of objects, from Mini cars and Triumph motorcycles to Anglepoise lamps and Leica cameras. His influence extends to cultural collaborations, including designing stage suits for David Bowie and uniforms for the Manchester United football team. Knighted in 2000, Smith remains a central figure in British design, with his eponymous brand now operating 130 stores across more than 60 countries. Despite this global reach, he maintains strong ties to his roots, having been named an honorary Freeman of the City of Nottingham in 1997.
