In short: Simone Battle was a rising force in American pop, moving from television roles to international music charts. After a standout stint on The X Factor, she became a member of the girl group G.R.L., achieving global hits before her life was cut short at just 25 years old.

Born on June 17, 1989, Simone Battle began her career with small television roles in series such as Zoey 101 and Everybody Hates Chris. Industry executives noticed her skill during her 2011 audition for the US edition of The X Factor. She secured three 'yes' votes from judges Paula Abdul, Simon Cowell, Cheryl, and L.A. Reid, she advanced to the Bootcamp phase. Despite being mentored by Cowell as one of his favorite contestants, she was eliminated during the first week of live shows alongside Tiah Tolliver.

In 2012, Battle transitioned into film and group music. She made her film debut in We the Party, appearing alongside Snoop Dogg and Mandela Van Peebles, and was briefly considered for a new lineup of The Pussycat Dolls. The group achieved significant international success in 2014 with the single 'Wild Wild Love,' featuring Pitbull, which reached the top ten in several countries including the United Kingdom and Australia. Their follow-up hit, 'Ugly Heart,' released in June 2014, also saw top ten success in markets like Ireland and Sweden.

The momentum of Battle's career was tragically interrupted. Three months after the success of 'Ugly Heart,' she died by suicide on September 5, 2014, at the age of 25. A spokesperson indicated she had been struggling with depression linked to financial issues. Following her passing, G.R.L. issued the track 'Lighthouse' to honour her, incorporating various images and footage from her life.
