From corporate accountant to Marvel superhero: the unconventional trajectory of actor Simu Liu
In short: Before he became a global cinematic icon, Simu Liu followed a rigid path toward a traditional career in finance. After being laid off from an accounting firm, he pivoted toward the performing arts, eventually securing a historic role that transformed his career and brought new representation to the blockbuster stage.
Born in Harbin, China, in 1989, Simu Liu spent his early years with his grandparents before reuniting with his parents in Canada at age five. His upbringing was marked by high academic expectations and a rigorous focus on achievement. Following this trajectory, he graduated from business school in 2011 and began a career as an accountant at Deloitte. However, his tenure in the corporate world was brief; he was laid off in 2012, a turning point that prompted him to abandon the conventional path his parents had envisioned for him.
Liu transitioned into the entertainment industry, initially working as a stunt performer and background actor. His early credits included appearances in projects like Pacific Rim and various music videos. His breakthrough in television came with the crime drama Blood and Water in 2015, followed by a starring role in the acclaimed sitcom Kim’s Convenience, which ran until 2021. These roles allowed him to build a diverse portfolio, appearing in series such as Orphan Black and Fresh Off the Boat, while refining his craft across different genres.
The defining moment of his career arrived in 2021 when he was cast as the lead in a major Marvel production. As the first actor of Asian descent to headline a film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Liu gained international prominence. Beyond acting, he has authored a memoir, We Were Dreamers, and has used his public platform to advocate for Asian communities, including supporting relief efforts following the 2023 Monterey Park shooting. His work continues to span various media, including voice acting and roles in major studio films like Barbie.
