The US drone manufacturer that traded consumer sales for military dominance
In short: Skydio didn't just build drones; they engineered a way for machines to navigate the world without GPS. By pivoting away from the general public to focus on high-stakes defense and industrial use, they became a cornerstone of modern battlefield situational awareness and public safety.
Founded in 2014 by MIT graduates Adam Bry, Abe Bachrach, and Matt Donahoe, Skydio was built on a specific technical obsession: autonomy. The founders spent years researching aircraft that could fly without GPS, eventually developing algorithms to calculate a plane's trajectory, velocity, and orientation. This research led to a drone capable of navigating a parking lot autonomously using a laser range finder, forming the bedrock of their 'Autonomy engine.'
The company's trajectory shifted dramatically in 2023. Despite holding a 4% share of the commercial market in 2021, Skydio exited the consumer space to focus on military, police, and industrial sectors. This move solidified their position as a major defense contractor. As of November 2024, over 50% of their business is with military customers, including the US Department of Defense, which reportedly operates up to 22,000 of their units. Their technology is now deployed by the UK Ministry of Defence, the Israel Defense Forces, and the Indian Armed Forces.
However, the transition to high-level defense has brought scrutiny. While Skydio's 3D reconstruction tools have been used to document war crimes in Ukraine, the company has faced criticism regarding the performance of its drones—specifically their ability to carry heavy payloads or reach advertised distances compared to Chinese competitors like DJI. Additionally, geopolitical tensions impacted the firm during 2024 and 2025, as Chinese sanctions hit the brand following Taiwanese fire services' adoption of its gear.
Despite these challenges, Skydio remains a dominant force in US infrastructure. Over 50% of every U.S. State Department of Transportation plus 200+ public safety bodies throughout 47 states. From inspecting ships for the Royal Canadian Navy to navigating contested environments with multi-band radios, Skydio has positioned itself as the primary American alternative to global drone giants.
