In short: These predatory freshwater fish are famous for their ability to migrate across land by wriggling their bodies. While prized as a delicacy in parts of Asia and Africa, their introduction to non-native ecosystems has turned them into a notorious, apex-predator invasive species that challenges environmental management efforts worldwide.

The Channidae family, which includes over 50 species, originated at least 50 million years ago in the south Himalayan region. These fish possess specialized suprabranchial organs that function like labyrinth organs, allowing them to breathe air. This physiological adaptation, combined with their ability to remain alive on land for up to four days if kept moist, enables them to traverse distances of up to 400 meters to reach new water sources.

Snakeheads have become a global phenomenon due to their status as an invasive species. In the United States, they gained national attention in 2002 after being discovered in a Maryland pond. Since then, they have been confirmed in numerous states, including Virginia, Florida, and New Jersey. Because they often lack natural predators in these new environments, they can quickly dominate local food webs, consuming fish, frogs, and occasionally small rodents.

The reproductive capacity of these fish is significant; a single female can produce up to 150,000 eggs over a two-year period by spawning multiple times annually. This high fertility, paired with their aggressive nature, has led to their reputation as 'fishzilla' or 'Frankenfish.' While some regions have attempted to manage their spread through legislation—such as bans on possession in various U.S. states—others view them as a valuable food source, farming them in aquaculture or encouraging their consumption in restaurants to help mitigate their ecological impact.
