How a 1960s pop duo transformed from session singers into global icons
In short: Before they were household names, Sonny and Cher were behind-the-scenes vocalists for Phil Spector. From the streets of Los Angeles to the heights of the Billboard charts, discover how this visually striking pair leveraged television and fashion to define an entire era of American entertainment.
The partnership began in November 1962, when sixteen-year-old Cherilyn Sarkisian met twenty-seven-year-old Salvatore "Sonny" Bono in a Los Angeles coffee shop. At the time, Bono was working for legendary producer Phil Spector at Gold Star Studios. Cher’s early career was rooted in the studio; she served as a session singer, providing backing vocals for iconic recordings such as The Ronettes' "Be My Baby" and Darlene Love's "A Fine, Fine Boy".
Their ascent to stardom was marked by a series of strategic musical and media shifts. Initially performing under the name "Caesar and Cleo," the duo released singles in 1964 before officially adopting the name Sonny & Cher in September 1964.
Their breakthrough arrived in 1965 with "I Got You Babe," a massive hit that sold over three million copies and helped their debut album, *Look at Us*, peak at number two on the Billboard charts. Although their fame ebbed during the late 1960s, the pair experienced a resurgence through the variety programme *The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour*, broadcast between 1971 and 1974. This era solidified their status as cultural icons, even as their personal lives underwent significant changes, including their 1974 divorce. Beyond music, the duo's legacy is cemented by their massive commercial impact, having sold over 4 and 40 million records worldwide.
