In short: Once a staple of the global racing circuit, the South African Grand Prix has not hosted a Formula One race since 1993. Despite its rich history—from the coastal Prince George Circuit to the high-altitude challenges of Kyalami—the event remains absent, caught between economic hurdles, political complexities, and shifting international standards.

The South African Grand Prix began in 1934 at the Prince George Circuit in East London, a coastal road course that initially spanned 24.4 kilometers. Following World War II, the event evolved, eventually joining the Formula One World Championship in 1962. In 1967, the race moved to the Kyalami circuit near Johannesburg. Situated 1,500 meters above sea level, Kyalami presented unique technical challenges, particularly for engine performance. By the 1980s, these high-altitude conditions gave a distinct advantage to turbo-charged engines, which could better regulate air intake compared to their naturally aspirated counterparts.

The event’s history was frequently marked by external pressures. The 1981 race was held as a Formula Libre event due to the FISA–FOCA war, and by 1985, the Grand Prix became a focal point of international controversy. Amidst a state of emergency and widespread boycotts related to the nation's policy of apartheid, the race was suspended. It returned briefly in 1992 and 1993 following the end of apartheid, but the 1993 event proved to be the final Grand Prix held in the country to date.

Reviving the race has proven difficult. While the Kyalami circuit was sold to the South African Automobile Association in 1993, the high costs of hosting Formula One have remained a significant barrier. Recent efforts to return to the calendar have faced repeated setbacks, including a failed bid for the 2024 season linked to the government's stance on the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Although the FIA approved planned upgrades to Kyalami in 2025 to meet modern standards, experts suggest a deal remains far-fetched, with competition emerging from other nations like Rwanda and Nigeria.
