South Gyeongsang: The Industrial Heartbeat and Ancient Soul of Southeastern South Korea
In short: Bordered by the Korea Strait, South Gyeongsang is a province of striking contrasts. It balances heavy industry and world-leading shipyards with the serene, ancient preservation of the Tripitaka Koreana. From the fertile Gimhae Plain to its rugged coastline, this region serves as a vital economic and cultural pillar of South Korea.
Located in the southeastern corner of South Korea, South Gyeongsang province is a landscape defined by the Nakdong River. This waterway and its tributaries irrigate the Gimhae Plain, a delta region that stands as one of the country’s most productive granaries. Beyond its agricultural output—which includes rice, barley, beans, and various fruits—the province boasts an irregular coastline stretching approximately 1,400 miles, encompassing over 400 islands. This maritime geography supports a thriving fishing industry, with more than 40 types of marine products harvested annually due to the interaction of warm and cold ocean currents.
The province is equally defined by its industrial might. While cities like Jinju, Tongyeong, and Sacheon host diverse light industries, the port cities of Masan and Jinhae are hubs for heavy industry and chemical production. This economic engine is complemented by a deep historical legacy. Haein Temple, constructed in 802 CE, sits within the Mount Gaya National Park on the border with North Gyeongsang province. The temple is world-renowned for housing the Tripitaka Koreana, a collection of over 80,000 wooden blocks engraved with Buddhist scriptures, which was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1995.
Administratively, the province has undergone significant evolution. Changwon currently serves as the provincial capital, overseeing a region that includes both mountainous terrain, such as Mount Jiri, and densely populated urban centers. The province is bordered to the east by Busan and Ulsan, which are metropolitan cities with their own independent administrative status. With a population of over 3.3 million as of 2020, South Gyeongsang remains a critical intersection of South Korea's past and its modern industrial future.
