From a 19th-century farm to an Austin academic powerhouse
In short: St. Edward's University wasn't always a premier regional institution. Founded on Texas farmland by the same man who established Notre Dame, it evolved from a small academy into a diverse co-educational campus that balances rigorous academics with a deep tradition of Holy Cross values.
Edward Sorin, who led the Congregation of Holy Cross as Superior General, is the founder of this university. In 1877, Sorin established St. Edward's Academy on farmland south of Austin, naming it for his patron saint, King Edward the Confessor. While it began as a high school and academy, the institution secured its university charter in 1925. It has maintained a strong affiliation with the Congregation of Holy Cross throughout its history, though leadership transitioned from primarily priests and brothers to laypeople in 1984. The high school section eventually closed during the 1970s. Women first joined as students in 1966 for a coordinate institution. By 1970, that program was absorbed to make the university co-educational.
The campus architecture reflects this long history, notably the Main Building designed by Nicholas J. Clayton in the Gothic Revival style using local white limestone. This landmark has survived significant trials, including a fire in 1903 and tornado damage in 1922, eventually earning a spot on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. Modern expansion followed under President George E. Martin (1999–2021), who oversaw a period of growth that doubled enrollment and significantly expanded the university's physical footprint. The college also organized its first baseball and football teams in 1889. Bill and Pat Munday provided a $13 million gift to finance extensive library improvements during 2013.
Today, St. Edward's is recognized for its high standing in undergraduate teaching and value, ranking 5th among regional universities in the West for 2026. It offers over 50 bachelor's degrees and serves a diverse student body representing 34 faith traditions as of 2024. The university also maintains an international presence through a portal campus in Angers, France, providing educational opportunities for students across the Atlantic. Students can pursue eight different master's degree programs across various schools. The university also sponsors sixteen varsity teams that compete in NCAA Division II.
