Is this Finnish-Swedish forest giant the world's oldest limited liability company?
In short: Stora Enso is a modern powerhouse in renewable materials, but its roots reach back to 1288. A single preserved share certificate from a Swedish copper mine suggests the company may be the oldest corporation in existence, having evolved from medieval mining into a global leader in sustainable wood-based products.
The origins of Stora Enso are traced to the Swedish mining firm Stora Kopparberg, which issued the world's oldest known share certificate in 1288. This document granted the Bishop of Västerås a 12.5% stake in the Falun Mine. The company’s corporate status was formally recognized by a 1347 charter from King Magnus IV of Sweden. During the 17th century, this mine produced two-thirds of the world's copper, though the company later pivoted to iron ore in 1731 and eventually to forestry by the late 19th century.
The modern entity, Stora Enso, was formed in 1998 through the merger of the Swedish Stora AB and the Finnish Enso Oyj. Enso’s history began in the 1850s with Wilhelm Gutzeit, whose company expanded into sawmilling and pulp production throughout the 20th century. By the time of the merger, both companies had deep industrial legacies, with Stora having already divested its mining operations in the 1970s to focus entirely on forest-related activities.
Today, Stora Enso operates as a global leader in renewable materials, moving away from traditional paper production toward packaging, biomaterials, and construction products. As of 2023, the company employed 20,000 people and maintained its headquarters in a wooden building in Helsinki. While some observers cite its 13th-century origins as evidence of it being the world's oldest corporation, the company continues to restructure, recently emphasizing renewable packaging to align with the growth of online shopping and global sustainability trends.
