From Ohio oil fields to a national energy giant: The Marathon Petroleum story

In short: Marathon Petroleum began as a collection of small Ohio oil companies in 1887. Today, it stands as the largest petroleum refinery operator in the United States. Its evolution from a regional player to a national brand involved complex corporate mergers, strategic acquisitions, and a massive shift in American energy infrastructure.

The origins of Marathon Petroleum trace back to 1887, when several small oil companies in Ohio consolidated to form The Ohio Oil Company. By 1889, the entity was acquired by the Standard Oil Trust, eventually moving its headquarters to Findlay, Ohio. Following the 1911 Supreme Court-mandated breakup of the Standard Oil Trust under the Sherman Anti-Trust Act, the company regained its independence and began expanding its operations into Texas and beyond, eventually acquiring the Marathon brand name through the purchase of Transcontinental Oil.

The modern iteration of the company was shaped by a series of high-stakes corporate maneuvers. In 1998, the refining operations of Marathon Oil and Ashland Inc. merged to form Marathon Ashland Petroleum. By 2005, Ashland exited the retail business, selling its share to Marathon. A pivotal moment occurred in 2011 when Marathon Oil spun off its refining and marketing subsidiary, allowing it to operate as an independent, publicly traded corporation. The company’s footprint grew significantly in 2018 with the $23 billion acquisition of Andeavor, which established Marathon as the largest refinery operator in the United States and expanded its reach into the Western United States for the first time.

Today, the company operates 13 refineries with a combined capacity exceeding 3 million barrels per calendar day. Beyond refining, its infrastructure includes extensive pipeline networks, midstream assets managed through MPLX LP, and a diverse portfolio of renewable fuel facilities. While the company has achieved national scale, its history is marked by the challenges of large-scale industrial operations, including significant legal settlements following refinery fires and the strategic divestment of its Speedway convenience store chain to Seven & i Holdings in 2021 for $21 billion.
