How a Leeds cricket franchise rebranded under new ownership to become Sunrisers Leeds
In short: The professional cricket team formerly known as the Northern Superchargers has undergone a significant transformation. Following a major ownership shift in 2025, the franchise moved away from its original branding to adopt a new identity. This change reflects the evolving landscape of professional cricket and the influence of international investment.
The franchise, based in Leeds, was originally established as the Northern Superchargers to represent Yorkshire and Durham in The Hundred, a competition that debuted in the 2021 English and Welsh cricket season. During its initial formation in 2019, the team faced naming challenges, with early reports suggesting the name Leeds Superchargers before officials settled on Northern Superchargers to avoid alienating fans across the broader region. The team has played its matches at Headingley Cricket Ground since its inception, a venue that also serves as the home of the Yorkshire County Cricket Club.
A pivotal shift occurred in 2025 during the sale of the competition's franchises. The England and Wales Cricket Board initially granted Yorkshire County Cricket Club a 51% stake in the team, with the remaining 49% allocated for an auction. However, Yorkshire County Cricket Club decided to divest its entire interest. Sun TV Network Limited subsequently acquired 100% of the franchise, assuming full operational control on 1 October 2025. Shortly thereafter, in early November 2025, the organization officially rebranded as Sunrisers Leeds.
The team's history includes notable coaching appointments and player signings. Danielle Hazell served as the first coach of the women's team for a four-year term, eventually succeeded by Lisa Keightley in December 2024. The men's team was initially led by Darren Lehmann. During the inaugural draft in October 2019, the franchise secured high-profile talent, including Lauren Winfield-Hill for the women's side and Ben Stokes for the men's team, alongside other England internationals like Adil Rashid and David Willey. While the women's team was originally intended to play at various locations including York and South Northumberland, the COVID-19 pandemic led to the consolidation of all matches at Headingley, where they continue to play today.
