Surigao del Sur is a rugged Philippine province defined by its mountains and coastline
In short: Tucked against the Philippine Sea, Surigao del Sur is a province of dramatic contrasts. From the deep trenches off its eastern coast to the Diwata Mountain Range that isolates it from the rest of Mindanao, this region balances vast forest lands with a complex, multi-ethnic cultural history.
Formed as the 56th Philippine province on June 19, 1960, Surigao del Sur occupies the northeastern coast of Mindanao. Its geography is dominated by the Diwata Mountain Range, which acts as a physical barrier separating the province from the island's interior. To the east, the province faces the Philippine Sea, home to the Mindanao Deep, one of the world's most profound oceanic trenches. This coastal orientation influences both the local economy and the climate, which is characterized by year-round rainfall with a distinct wet season from November to June.
The province covers 4,932.70 square kilometres, with nearly 68 percent classified as forest land. This environment supports a diverse population of 648,858 people, according to the 2024 census. The cultural landscape is a blend of indigenous groups, including the Kamayo, Mandaya, and Mamanwa, alongside migrants from across the Philippines and descendants of European and Chinese settlers. This diversity is reflected in the local languages; while Surigaonon and Tandaganon are widely spoken, Cebuano and Kamayo are dominant in the southern municipalities.
Economic activity in the province is deeply tied to its natural resources. Beyond agriculture, including rice and banana production, the region is rich in metallic minerals like gold, nickel, and chromite, which have fueled both small and large-scale mining operations. Tourism also plays a significant role, highlighted by the Tinuy-an Falls—often called the Niagara Falls of the Philippines—and a thriving surfing scene in towns like Cantilan and Lanuza. Despite its natural wealth, the province remains one of the most vulnerable in the Philippines to the impacts of climate change, a reality that shapes its ongoing development and governance.
