Japan's first reality dating show for gay and bisexual men
In short: The Boyfriend marks a shift in Japanese media, offering an intimate look at queer life. Rather than a high-stakes competition with eliminations, the series focuses on cohabitation and organic connection within a shared residence, allowing participants to navigate their identities and relationships in real-time.
The Boyfriend premiered on Netflix on July 9, 2024, making history as Japan's first reality dating program specifically for gay and bisexual men. Filmed beginning in October 2023 in the town of Tateyama, Chiba, the show centers on a cast of Japanese and East Asian queer men who live together in a shared residence called the "Green Room." Unlike traditional dating formats that rely on constant conflict or elimination, this series prioritizes the nuances of daily life and gradual emotional progression.
The mechanics of the show are designed to foster intimacy outside the group dynamic. Each day, producers select one cast member to operate a coffee truck, giving them the opportunity to choose a partner for the shift. This setting provides a private space away from the house to deepen connections without the influence of the rest of the cast. While participants can vote on who they would like to take on more conventional dates, these outings only occur if the interest is mutual.
The series also serves as a platform for cultural commentary. While offering wider perspectives on Japanese LGBT rights and homosexuality, a group of experts—comprising Yoshimi Tokui, Durian Lollobrigida, Thelma Aoyama, Chiaki Horan, and Megumi—examines the behavior of the cast. This dual layer of entertainment and advocacy is reinforced by a curated soundtrack; for instance, the Korean indie band Glen Check provides both the theme song "Dazed and Confused" and a recurring leitmotif, "4ever," to signal moments of emotional growth or relationship milestones.
