In short: In the early 1990s, Alan Maman was just a teenage rapper in a duo called the Whooliglarz. But after his group's debut was shelved, a pivot toward the sampler changed the sound of modern hip-hop forever, leading him to the heights of New York's underground scene.

Born in 1977 and raised in the affluent suburb of Beverly Hills, California, Alan Daniel Maman—known professionally as the Alchemist—did not initially set out to master the mixing board. In 1991, at just 14 years old, he formed the rap duo Whooliganz with Scott Caan. Although 'Put Your Handz Up' debuted in 1993, Tommy Boy Records halted the project by cancelling their upcoming LP. This setback proved pivotal; while Caan moved toward acting, Maman turned his attention to the mechanics of beat-making.

Under the mentorship of DJ Muggs, Maman learned to manipulate samplers and mixing boards, a skill set that would define his signature, sample-heavy production style. His career trajectory saw him move from the West Coast to New York City, where he became a cornerstone of the East Coast sound. By 1999, he had produced the single "The Realest" for Mobb Deep, a breakthrough that established his reputation. He would go on to work with legendary figures such as Nas, Jadakiss, and Snoop Dogg, as well as contributing to the iconic Grand Theft Auto V video game score alongside Oh No, Woody Jackson, and Tangerine Dream.

Maman's career is marked by both immense collaboration and notable friction. While he has released acclaimed solo projects like 1st Infantry (2004) and Russian Roulette (2012), much of his legacy lies in his partnerships, such as the group Gangrene with Oh No. However, his path has not been without conflict; a 1999 dispute with rapper Ras Kass over unpaid beats led to a public feud. Despite such tensions, his influence remains pervasive, spanning from underground rap to mainstream hits, and even serving as the official concert DJ for Eminem following a 2005 tour bus accident.
