In short: After a chance encounter in the mountains, a stoic programmer finds her life transformed by a supernatural visitor. What begins as a strange encounter involving a divine sword evolves into a domestic saga where mythical beings, gods, and dragons attempt to navigate the complexities of human family and modern life.

The series, written by Coolkyousinnjya, began its serialization in Monthly Action in May 2013. It follows Kobayashi, a 25-year-old programmer, who encounters a dragon named Tohru during a drunken excursion. After Kobayashi removes a holy sword from the dragon's back, Tohru—a member of the Chaos faction—falls in love and becomes her personal maid.

The narrative expands beyond this central duo to include a diverse cast of mythical entities. Kanna, a young dragon exiled from the dragon realm, joins the household and becomes Kobayashi's ward. Other significant figures include Elma, a water dragon from the rival Order faction who works at Kobayashi's office, and Lucoa, a former deity who lives with a young mage named Shouta.

The world-building explores the friction between the dragon realm and Earth. This is exemplified by Tohru's father, known as the Emperor of Demise, who opposes the relationship between a Chaos dragon and a human due to non-interference rules. Despite these cosmic tensions, the story focuses on domesticity, with characters like Fafnir becoming obsessed with human pop culture and video games.

The franchise has seen significant expansion, including an anime series produced by Kyoto Animation that aired in 2017 and a second season in 2021. The story's emotional core is highlighted in chapter 97 of the manga, where Kobayashi finally reciprocates Tohru's feelings, transitioning their relationship from employer and employee to a romantic couple.
