The mystery of Case 1259: finding a volcano that vanished from history
In short: For thirty years, scientists were haunted by a massive volcanic eruption with no known location. This documentary follows the journey to identify the 'lost giant' that destabilized the global climate in the 13th century.
Known as Case 1259, this event was identified through ice cores in the Arctic and Antarctic. The eruption was so massive it dwarfed Mount Tambora—the deadliest eruption in recorded history—sending shockwaves through every civilization of the Medieval world.
Two French scientists reopened the investigation after decades of the case being filed away as unsolved. By synthesizing ice core data, medieval chronicles, and climate records, they located the source: Rinjani-Samalas, a volcano in the highlands of Indonesia that had remained hidden for 800 years.
