Why this American rock band uses British spelling for their name
In short: From their California roots to global viral hits, The Neighbourhood's identity is defined by a deliberate linguistic choice. Discover how a simple spelling tweak helped them stand out, the highs of their Billboard success, and the turbulent hiatus that nearly ended their career.
Formed in Newbury Park, California, in August 2011, the alternative rock group The Neighbourhood (often abbreviated as The NBHD) adopted a specific spelling to differentiate themselves. On the advice of their manager, the band chose the British 'neighbourhood' over the American version to avoid confusion with an existing group using the latter spelling. This stylistic choice extends to their song titles as well.
The band's early years were marked by rapid ascent. Following the release of EPs like 'I'm Sorry...' and 'Thank You,', they signed with Columbia Records for their 2013 debut, 'I Love You.'. This era produced their most enduring hit, 'Sweater Weather', which peaked at number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100 and reached number one on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart. The track saw a significant resurgence nearly a decade later due to popularity on Spotify and TikTok.
However, the band's trajectory has not been without significant disruption. In February 2022, The Neighbourhood announced an indefinite hiatus. This period followed the departure of drummer Brandon Fried in November 2022, following sexual misconduct allegations brought by María Zardoya of The Marías.
After a period of silence, the band signaled a comeback in August 2025, announcing both a return to music and the return of Fried to the lineup. Their fifth studio album, 'Ultrasound' (stylized as (((((ultraSOUND)))))), was released on November 14, 2025, featuring tracks such as 'OMG', 'Lovebomb', and 'Private'.
