How a childhood nickname became a platinum-selling rock phenomenon
In short: In 1995, Brendan Brown launched a New York band using a childhood nickname his father gave him and his brothers. Decades later, that same group would conquer international charts and survive endless lineup shifts, eventually seeing original multi-instrumentalist Philip A. Jimenez return to the group after a twenty-two year absence.
The band's name, Wheatus, is a derivative of 'wedus,' a childhood nickname used by the Brown brothers. Formed in 199 in New York City, the group's early success was driven by frontman Brendan Brown, who recruited his brother Peter on drums, alongside Rich Liegey and Philip A. Jimenez. Their breakthrough arrived with the August 15, 2000, release of their self-titled debut album, featuring the global hit 'Teenage Dirtbag.' The single reached number one in Australia and number two in the United Kingdom, where the album eventually earned platinum certification.
The band's history is marked by significant structural changes and a move toward independence. After working with producer Ray Maiello, who helped secure a multi-album deal with Columbia Records executive Kevin Patrick, the group eventually left their label in October 2004 to establish their own imprint, Montauk Mantis. During this period, 'Hand Over Your Loved Ones' (2003) arrived, followed by a 2005 reissue titled 'Suck Fony' that contained a Pat Benatar 'Hit Me with Your Best Shot' rendition.
Throughout the 2000s and 2010s, the lineup underwent constant evolution, with Brendan Brown remaining the sole original member. The band experimented with various genres, from the 'post-apocalyptic love songs' of 2013's 'The Valentine LP' to the 80s metal influences intended for their sixth album. Despite the volatility of members like drummer Pete Brown, who left in 2006 to marry, the band maintained a global presence, even collaborating with members of One Direction's band in 2014. In a full-circle moment, the band announced in late 2025 that original multi-instrumentalist Philip A. Jimenez would rejoin for upcoming tours after 22 years away.
