How a Romanian basketball club rose from student roots to become a national powerhouse
In short: Founded in 1947, U-BT Cluj-Napoca evolved from a university sports section into a professional basketball titan. Despite decades of rivalry with capital-based teams and a mid-2000s split from its parent club, the team has secured eleven Romanian League Championships, defining the landscape of Romanian basketball through resilience and tactical innovation.
The club began as a student-led initiative in 1947, coexisting briefly with a university team in Cluj before merging in 1948. For years, the team struggled against established local rivals like Flamura Roșie and ASA Cluj. It was not until 1955 that the team, then known as IMF-Progresul Cluj, finally earned promotion to the top tier. During the socialist era, the club frequently challenged the dominance of Bucharest-based teams like Steaua and Dinamo, which benefited from direct support from the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the army.
The 1990s marked a pivotal shift as the team, then known as Universitatea, became the first non-capital club to win a Romanian Championship in 1992. This era featured Gheorghe Mureșan, the only Romanian to ever play in the NBA, who helped the team secure titles before his departure. By 2001, the basketball section separated from the parent sports club to operate as a private entity, a move intended to unlock new growth. This transition allowed for the recruitment of international talent, including the first foreign players in the club's history, such as Dejan Dukovčić in 2002.
The modern era of the club has been defined by strategic partnerships and consistent European competition. In 2010, a sponsorship with Banca Transilvania solidified the team's identity as U-BT Cluj-Napoca. The 2010–11 season was particularly historic, ending a fifteen-year title drought with a dramatic buzzer-beater from Tyler Morris. Today, the club competes in the EuroCup and the regional ABA League, maintaining its status as a premier institution in Romanian sports while continuing to build on its legacy of eleven league titles, eight cups, and five supercups.
