How a 1946 merger created one of Italy's most iconic football identities
In short: Born from the union of two Genoese rivals, Sampdoria is defined by its distinct blue, white, red, and black kit. While the club reached the pinnacle of Italian football in 1991, its history is a turbulent saga of financial crises, ownership battles, and dramatic escapes from the threat of relegation.
Unione Calcio Sampdoria emerged on 12 August 1946, following the merger of two historic Genoese clubs: Sampierdarenese and Andrea Doria. Both predecessors traced their roots to the 1890s, often competing against each other in the early Italian championships. To signify the equality of the two founding entities, the new club adopted a unique kit design: the blue of Andrea Doria combined with the white, red, and black bands of Sampierdarenese. This striking aesthetic earned the team their enduring nickname, the blucerchiati, or blue-circled.
The club's golden era arrived under the ownership of oil businessman Paolo Mantovani, who acquired the team in 1979. Under the tactical guidance of Vujadin Boškov, Sampdoria achieved unprecedented success, winning the Coppa Italia in 1985, 1988, and 1989, and securing the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1990. The crowning achievement came in 1991, when the club won its first and only Scudetto, finishing five points ahead of Internazionale. This period cemented Sampdoria's reputation as a formidable force in European football, though they narrowly missed the European Cup title in 1992 after an extra-time loss to Barcelona.
Following the sudden death of Paolo Mantovani in 1993, the club entered a more volatile phase. Subsequent ownerships, including those of Riccardo Garrone and Massimo Ferrero, were marked by financial instability and fluctuating fortunes. The club has experienced multiple relegations to Serie B, and in recent years, faced severe financial hardship that nearly led to bankruptcy. Despite these challenges, the club remains a fixture of Genoese football, sharing the Stadio Luigi Ferraris with their fierce rivals, Genoa CFC, in the intense Derby della Lanterna.
