In short: From a peasant background in Madhya Pradesh to the heights of Indian governance, Uma Bharti’s career is defined by intense conviction. A central figure in the Ram Janmabhoomi movement, she famously refused to regret the destruction of the Babri Masjid, even while facing legal scrutiny and political upheaval.

Born on 3 May 1959 in Dunda, Uma Bharti rose from a family of peasants to become a prominent force in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Her political journey began in earnest in the 1980s, mentored by Rajmata Vijayaraje Scindia. While her 1984 parliamentary bid in Khajuraho failed, she secured the seat in 1989 and held it through successive elections in 1991, 1996, and 1998, before moving to the Bhopal constituency in 1999.

Bharti gained national notoriety as a leader in the Ram Janmabhoomi movement. She was present during the December 1992 demolition of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya. Although the Liberhan Commission indicted her for inciting violence, Bharti has maintained that while she does not regret the event—viewing it as a step toward building a Ram Mandir—she does not deny her presence at the site. She has even expressed a willingness to accept the 'moral responsibility' for the incident.

Her administrative career reached a peak when she led the BJP to a landslide victory in the 2003 Madhya Pradesh Assembly elections, winning 173 of 230 seats. However, her tenure as Chief Minister was short-lived; she resigned in August 2004 following an arrest warrant related to the 1994 Hubli riots. Throughout her career, she has held diverse portfolios, including Coal and Mines, and Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Bharti's political path has been marked by volatility, including a period of expulsion from the BJP and the formation of her own party, the Bharatiya Janshakting Party. Despite these fractures, she eventually returned to the BJP fold, later serving as a Minister and representing the Jhansi constituency in the Lok Sabha.
