In short: Established during World War II to defeat Japanese forces, the U.S. Fifth Fleet was deactivated in 1947. It remained inactive for 48 years before being reactivated in 1995, returning to project naval power across the Persian Gulf, Red Sea, and Arabian Sea.

The Fifth Fleet's history is defined by dramatic shifts in global strategy. During World War II, it was a massive combat force; by June 1944, under Admiral Raymond Spruance, it comprised 535 warships, making it the largest combat fleet in the world. It played a pivotal role in the Mariana Islands, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa campaigns, and was involved in sinking the Japanese battleship Yamato in April 1945. It also conducted Operation Hailstone against the Truk naval base. This force was originally formed from the Central Pacific Force.

A unique tactical maneuver during the war involved alternating command between Admiral Spruance and Admiral William F. Halsey, Jr. This rotation allowed staffs time to prepare for subsequent operations and served a secondary purpose: it confused Japanese intelligence into believing the two admirals were commanding separate fleets. This strategic deception was achieved by flipping the fleet's designation back and forth.

After being stood down in 1947, the fleet remained inactive until 1995, when John Scott Redd proposed the creation of the only new U.S. Navy Fleet in fifty years. Today, the fleet is headquartered at NSA Bahrain in Manama, Bahrain. The current command includes nearly 15,000 personnel serving aboard ships. An additional 1,000 support staff members are stationed on land.

Modern operations are complex and multi-national. In 2001, Task Force 50—comprising over 59 ships from six nations—conducted strikes in Afghanistan. By early 2003, the fleet's scale peaked with five U.S. aircraft carriers, six amphibious assault ships, and over 30 Royal Navy vessels under its command. The fleet's current configuration typically features a Carrier Strike Group and an Amphibious Ready Group.
