In short: Designed to replace aging French infantry vehicles, the VBCI is a sophisticated eight-wheeled combat platform. Despite its advanced modular armour and integration into modern digital battlefield systems, the vehicle has faced a string of export rejections, struggling to secure a foothold in international markets despite its French military success.

The VBCI, or Véhicule blindé de combat d'infanterie, emerged from a 1990s French initiative to replace older infantry fighting vehicles. Originally conceived as a collaborative modular project involving Germany and the United Kingdom, the program stalled by 1999. France proceeded independently, ordering 700 units in 2000. Following technical hurdles, including a necessary redesign of the DRAGAR turret due to identified flaws, the first units entered active service in 2008. By 2018, France had completed the delivery of 630 vehicles, comprising 520 infantry fighting variants and 120 command post versions.

Technically, the VBCI is built on an aluminium hull with modular steel and titanium armour, allowing for field-replaceable protection. The 8x8 wheeled configuration was selected to balance mobility with the cost-effectiveness of maintenance compared to tracked alternatives. The vehicle is designed to integrate with the French C4ISR capability, utilizing terminal and regimental information systems to coordinate with soldiers equipped with the FÉLIN system. Later iterations, such as the 32-ton configuration, introduced reinforced undercarriages and centralized tire inflation to enhance protection against improvised explosive devices.

Despite its domestic utility, the VBCI has experienced a difficult export history. It was considered for the British FRES program in 2007 and tested again in 2014, yet failed to secure a contract. Similar outcomes occurred in Poland, the UAE, and Bulgaria, where competitors like the Piranha V or the Boxer were often preferred. While negotiations for potential sales to Qatar and Greece have surfaced in recent years, the VBCI remains primarily a French success story, highlighting the intense competition and shifting requirements within the global armoured vehicle market.
