The 2018 survival thriller that turned a classic into a Kerala blockbuster
In short: What happens when a married couple's peaceful retreat to the Indian hills turns into a violent siege? This Malayalam-language action thriller reimagines a 197/1 classic, transforming a familiar story of intrusion into a high-stakes battle for survival.
Released on 20 September 2018, Varathan—which translates to 'Outsider' in Malayalam—is a survival thriller directed by Amal Neerad. The film serves as an adaptation of the 1971 Sam Peckinpah film Straw Dogs. While some critics, such as Sajin Shrijith of Cinema Express, noted that Neerad transplanted the story to Kerala with much of the original's brutality removed, the tension remained intact. The film's first poster was unveiled by Neerad on 20 June 2018. The production was a joint effort between the director and Nazriya Nazim, under the banners of Amal Neerad Productions and Fahadh Faasil and Friends.
The narrative follows Abi and Priya, a married couple returning to Priya's childhood home in the hills from Dubai. The peace of their retreat is shattered by the predatory intentions of local contractors and neighbors. Following a violent assault on Priya by neighbors including Josey, Johnny, and Jithin, the film shifts from a simmering drama into a high-intensity confrontation. Abi eventually resorts to extreme measures, using tools like a butcher's knife, LPG gas cylinders, and even electrical traps to defend his home and protect others, including a boy named Preman. The tension escalates after Priya notices a mysterious shadow through a window and later witnesses a man peering at her while she prepares to bathe. The conflict reaches a climax when Priya herself takes action, shooting two of the attackers during the struggle.
The film was a significant commercial success. By 5 October 2018, it had grossed ₹22 crore worldwide, with ₹18 crore of that total originating from Kerala. In Bangalore, it earned ₹1.06 crore in just 12 days, making it the highest-grossing Malayalam film in that city for 2018. By the end of its theatrical run, the film's total worldwide gross reached ₹33 crore. The musical score was composed and arranged by Sushin Shyam, with lyrics by Vinayak Sasikumar. The film's production was completed by June 2018, following filming in both Dubai and Wagamon.
