The Scindia matriarch who became Rajasthan's first female chief minister
In short: Born into the prominent Scindia dynasty, Vasundhara Raje has navigated a complex political landscape for decades. From her roots in the royal family of Gwalior to her influential roles in the Union Cabinet, she remains a singular figure in the history of Rajasthan's governance.
Vasundhara Raje Scindia, born on 8 March 1953 in Bombay, represents a significant intersection of royal lineage and modern political power. As a member of the Scindia dynasty and the matriarch of the Bamraulia family of Dholpur, her background is deeply rooted in Indian nobility. She is the daughter of Vijayaraje Scindia, the Maharani and later Rajmata of Gwalior, and Jiwajirao Scindia, the Maharaja of Gwalior. She was born in Mumbai, formerly known as Bombay. Her family connections include siblings such as Yashodhara Raje Scindia, a former minister in Madhya Pradesh.
Her political career is marked by several historic milestones. As the sole female Chief Minister of Rajasthan, she occupied that office during two distinct periods: 2003–2008 and 2013–2018. Her influence extended to the national stage as a minister in the Union Cabinet under Atal Bihari Vajpayee, where she served in various capacities, including Minister of State for External Affairs and Minister of State for Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions.
Raje's legislative presence has been consistent across multiple terms in the Rajasthan Assembly. Beyond her leadership roles, she has been recognized for her contributions to women's empowerment, receiving the "Women Together Award" from the UNO in 2007. While her political journey has faced scrutiny—including a 2023 dispute with Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot regarding allegations of bribery—she remains a central figure in the Bharatiya Janata Party, having served as its national vice president in 2019. She was elected to the Lok Sabha representing Jhalawar. At the Skoch Summit in 2018, she won the Best Chief Minister of the Year Award.
