How Warner Bros. transitioned from a Hollywood studio to a global theme park developer
In short: Warner Bros. Discovery Global Experiences manages a complex portfolio of theme parks and licensed intellectual property. From the short-lived Jungle Habitat in 1972 to modern international destinations like Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi, the company has navigated decades of shifting strategies, licensing deals, and ambitious, sometimes abandoned, expansion projects.
The company's foray into themed entertainment began in 1972 with Warner Bros. Jungle Habitat in New Jersey. Despite initial success, the 1,000-acre safari park struggled to attract repeat visitors. When a proposed $20 million expansion was rejected by local voters in 1976, the studio closed the park. This early experience set a pattern of experimentation that would define the division for decades, as the studio balanced direct ownership with licensing its vast library of characters, including Batman, Superman, and Looney Tunes.
In the late 1980s, the studio revitalized its approach through Warner Bros. Recreational Enterprises, partnering with Village Roadshow Theme Parks to build Warner Bros. Movie World on Australia's Gold Coast, which opened in 1991. This success prompted global ambitions, leading to the 1996 opening of Warner Bros. Movie World Germany. However, the company's strategy shifted again in the late 1990s as TimeWarner sought to divest from fixed assets. This led to the sale of parks and a pivot toward licensing, where characters were leased to operators like Six Flags and Universal Destinations & Experiences.
Today, the division operates under Warner Bros. Discovery Global Experiences, formed through multiple corporate mergers. The current model relies heavily on licensing, as seen in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal parks or the Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi, which the studio does not own but brands through licensing agreements. While some projects, such as a proposed park in Hillingdon, England, or a site in Shanghai, were abandoned, the company continues to integrate its consumer products and themed entertainment units to bring its intellectual property closer to global audiences.
