From gold rush grit to a global food hub
In short: West Sacramento was forged in the violence of the 1840s gold rush, but it has since transformed into a sophisticated center for food innovation. Once a rest stop for weary travelers in treacherous marshlands, it now hosts international headquarters for global agricultural giants.
The roots of West Sacramento are deeply tied to the 1840s California gold rush. In 1844, Flemish traveler John Schwartz became the first Euro-American to settle the area, establishing a salmon fishery and beginning the region's agricultural legacy. However, the gold rush also brought significant danger; in 1849, James McDowell was killed in a barroom argument, leaving his wife, Margaret, to navigate the hardships of the era alone. She eventually surveyed and platted the 'Town of Washington,' which served as a vital rest stop for travelers navigating the dangerous marshlands toward Sacramento.
The region's economy evolved through diverse industries. While the neighboring city of Sacramento urbanized, West Sacramento focused on agriculture and dairy. Notable figures like Mike Bryte used steamships to transport dairy products to regional markets, eventually becoming a prominent local leader. This industrial foundation was bolstered in 1963 with the opening of the Port of West Sacramento, which allowed for deep-sea traffic, primarily handling cement imports and rice exports.
In the 21st century, the city pivoted toward a high-tech identity. In 2011, Mayor Christopher Cabaldon launched an initiative to establish the city as a global food hub. This strategy successfully attracted major international companies, including Bayer Crop Science and Nippon Shokken, to establish research and manufacturing centers. Today, the city balances this corporate presence with community-focused initiatives, such as the 2017 'West Sacramento Home Run,' which provides universal preschool and tuition benefits for high school graduates.
