The wartime airfield that became a vital New York satellite
In short: Built in 1942 to defend New York City's water supply, Westchester County Airport has evolved from a military outpost into a critical commercial hub. Today, it serves as a vital reliever for the New York metropolitan area, managing a complex balance between regional growth and community environmental concerns.
Originally constructed during World War II, the airport served as a home for an Air National Guard unit tasked with protecting New York City and the Rye Lake water supply. By 1983, the facility underwent a strategic shift, transitioning from defensive military operations to cargo missions as the Guard unit relocated to Stewart International Airport.
The airport's commercial history is a tapestry of changing carriers. While American Airlines launched the first scheduled flights in late 1949, the facility has seen a rotating cast of airlines, from the jet era of Mohawk Airlines in 1965 to the modern dominance of JetBlue, which stands as the airport's largest carrier by scheduled passengers. In 2019, the airport recorded 872,023 passenger enplanements, part of a broader economic impact that reached approximately $736 million in fiscal year 2009.
Despite its utility, the airport faces significant local scrutiny. Expansion efforts have sparked friction with community groups, such as the Citizens for a Responsible County Airport, who raise concerns regarding stormwater runoff into the Kensico Reservoir and the presence of PFAS in groundwater. To mitigate noise, the airport employs several programs, including a voluntary curfew between midnight and 6:30 AM, and monitors noise levels via the ANOMS system, which flags events exceeding 90.0 decibels.
The infrastructure continues to modernize. Following a $30 million expansion in 2015, the county announced plans in March 2026 to proceed with further terminal modernization, selecting HNTB as the primary design consultant.
