India's massive new freight rail network is designed to haul double-stacked shipping containers
In short: Spanning 1,506 kilometers, the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor is a specialized industrial artery connecting northern India to the coast. By separating heavy goods from passenger traffic, this electrified double-line route enables massive trains to carry hundreds of containers at high speeds, aiming to decongest the nation's traditional railway network.
The Western Dedicated Freight Corridor represents a major shift in Indian logistics. Stretching from Dadri in Uttar Pradesh to the Jawaharlal Nehru Port in Maharashtra, the line is engineered specifically for heavy freight. It utilizes robust, head-hardened rails and supports significantly higher axle loads than standard tracks. These technical specifications allow for the movement of commodities like coal, iron, steel, and grain with unprecedented efficiency, using powerful electric engines to maintain speeds above 100 km/h.
A standout feature of the corridor is its generous loading gauge. Unlike many international systems that rely on specialized well cars to accommodate height restrictions, this route allows for double-stacked shipping containers on standard flatcars. A single train can transport up to 400 containers, a capacity made possible by fully grade-separated tracks and specialized tunnels. This infrastructure is a cornerstone of the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor, designed to work in tandem with new expressways to streamline the movement of goods across the country.
The project, which reached completion in March 2026, was a two-decade endeavor involving the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India. Originally proposed by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and later announced by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in 2005, the initiative required complex land acquisition and engineering feats, including long viaducts and electrified double-line sections. With the Western and Eastern corridors now operational, the government aims to shift 70% of India's goods trains onto these dedicated tracks, fundamentally modernizing the nation's supply chain infrastructure.
