Why a prominent Indian scholar changed his name at age five
In short: Yogendra Yadav is a leading psephologist and political scientist whose work shapes the understanding of Indian democracy. Yet, his personal identity was forged by a childhood of communal mockery and a family history of violence, leading to a name change that serves as a living memorial.
Born Salim Yadav in 1963, the scholar was forced to change his name to Yogendra at the age of five after being mocked by other children at school. While the name change was a practical response to bullying, his original name remains a significant piece of family history. It is kept in use among close friends and relatives as a deliberate act of remembrance for his grandfather, who was murdered during a communal riot in 1936.
Yadav’s academic and political trajectory is marked by a transition from rigorous social science to active governance. Between 2004 and 2016, he held a Senior Fellow position at the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies, while also helping establish the Lokniti network. His expertise in electoral politics led to roles as a commentator for major networks like NDTV and CNN-IBN, as well as a position on the National Advisory Council for the Right to Education Act in 2010.
His political career has been defined by both collaboration and friction. He was a prominent member of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) until 2015, but was eventually expelled following a dispute over the party's leadership style, which he described as dictatorial. Today, he remains a vocal advocate for linguistic diversity, arguing that replacing English with Hindi in education is as problematic as the current dominance of English, and instead champions the use of mother tongues in higher learning.
Beyond party politics, Yadav has been a key figure in grassroots movements, including the 2020–2021 Indian farmers' protest and the Bharat Jodo Yatra. His intellectual output is vast, ranging from co-authoring textbooks for the NCERT to publishing works on the agrarian crisis and the redesigning of affirmative action in higher education.
