The man who turned a coal mine into cinematic history
In short: Zeishan Quadri didn't just write a script; he sold a sprawling, multi-generational saga of the Indian coal mafia. By translating real-life grit into a cult classic, he bridged the gap between regional reality and mainstream Bollywood, forever changing how crime is depicted on screen.
Zeishan Quadri's career trajectory is defined by his pivotal role in creating 'Gangs of Wasseypur'. Born in 1983 in the coal-rich city of Dhanbad, Bihar (now Jharkhand), Quadri grew up in a strict environment before moving to Mumbai in 2008. After working in call centers and for HCL computers, he began studying world cinema, specifically focusing on the works of filmmakers like Akira Kurosawa and Majid Majidi.
In 2009, Quadri pitched his story to director Anurag Kashyap. The narrative was rooted in real-life events occurring in Dhanbad from 1941 to 2010. The project was so massive it was originally intended as a five-hour film but was ultimately released as a duology in 2012. It debuted at the Cannes Directors' Fortnight before its commercial release, eventually gaining a cult following for its raw realism and dark humor.
Quadri's influence extends beyond writing; he has navigated roles as an actor, producer, and director. He produced and directed 'Meeruthiya Gangsters', where Kashyap even assisted with the editing. While there were long-standing rumors of a third installment in the Wasseypur franchise involving Quadri directing, Anurag Kashyap officially debunked these claims in 2024.
His diverse portfolio includes acting in non-fiction series like 'Bicchoo Ka Khel' and producing films such as 'Halahal'. Despite his significant contributions to Indian indie cinema, he recently pivoted toward mainstream visibility by participating in the reality show Bigg Boss 19 in 2025, where he finished in 15th place.
