In short: In 2004, Zhang Shuai ended the year ranked 901st in the world. Fast forward to 2022, and the Chinese professional tennis player reached a career-high doubles ranking of world No. 2. Her journey from the ITF circuit to Grand Slam glory is a masterclass in professional persistence.

Zhang Shu Precisely, born in Tianjin on 21 January 1989, began her tennis journey at age six. After turning professional in 2003, her early years were spent navigating the grueling ITF Women's Circuit. By the end of 2004, she sat at 901st in the rankings, but she gradually climbed the ladder through consistent performances in lower-tier tournaments.

Her breakthrough in singles came notably at the 2013 Guangzhou Open, where she secured her first WTA Tour title as a wildcard entrant. She also claimed singles titles in 2017 at the same event and in 2022 at the Lyon Open. In the singles arena, she reached major quarterfinals at the 2016 Australian Open and the 2019 Wimbledon Championships, becoming one of only six Chinese players to achieve such a feat.

While her singles career was impressive, Zhang's greatest impact has been in doubles. She is a three-time Grand Slam doubles champion, winning the 2019 Australian Open and 2021 US Open with Samantha Stosur, and the 2026 Australian Open alongside Elise Mertens. Her doubles prowess is reflected in her 14 WTA Tour titles and a peak doubles ranking of No. 2 achieved in July 2022.

Beyond individual accolades, Zhang has been a stalwart for China, representing the nation in the Billie Jean King Cup since 2009 and competing in the 2012, 2016, and 2024 Olympic Games. Her career is defined by an ability to transition from a qualifying underdog to a dominant force on the world stage.
