The first Chinese man to break the Wimbledon barrier
In short: For decades, Chinese male tennis players faced a glass ceiling at the world's most prestigious grass courts. Zhang Zhizhen shattered that narrative in 2021, becoming a pioneer for his nation by qualifying for the Wimbledon main draw—a feat that required years of grueling, often overlooked, persistence on the lower circuits.
Zhang Zhizhen's path to the top was defined by a long, non-linear climb. Born in Shanghai to a sports family, he chose tennis over swimming as a child, eventually moving to Croatia in 2016 to train under agent Ivan Ljubicic. His early career was marked by significant hurdles, including a 2015 foot fracture that caused his form to drop until 2017, and a period where he finished the 2016 season outside the top 800 in the world rankings.
The turning point arrived through consistent 'grinding' on the ITF Futures and ATP Challenger tours. After a breakthrough in 2017 where he reached the top 350, Zhang began a steady ascent. By 2019, he reached a career-high year-end ranking of 138 and secured his first ATP Tour Masters 1000 main draw debut. These years of building experience on the secondary circuit provided the foundation for his historic 2021 season.
Zhang made history for Chinese tennis in 2021, as he was the initial male athlete of the Open Era to enter the Wimbledon main draw. He followed this by breaking into the top 100 in October 2022 and reaching an ATP Tour Masters 1000 quarterfinal in Madrid in 2023. As of July 2024, he reached a career-high singles ranking of No. 31, cementing his status as the highest-ever ranked Chinese male tennis player.
His journey highlights the importance of the 'Challenger' circuit—the bridge between amateur and elite play. While many fans see the highlights of Grand Slams, Zhang's success was built on winning titles in places like Lu'an and Shenzhen, and navigating the grueling qualifying draws that many elite players now bypass.
