In short: Šabac, a strategic city on the Sava river, has spent centuries as a contested prize between empires. From its origins as a medieval settlement to its role as a hub of modern Serbian culture and industry, the city has endured occupation, war, and radical reinvention to emerge as a resilient regional center.

First mentioned in 1454, Šabac has long occupied a precarious position on the frontier. Originally a Slavic settlement called Zaslon, it fell to the Ottoman Empire in 1459. Its strategic value led to the construction of a fortress in 1470, which changed hands repeatedly between the Ottomans and the Kingdom of Hungary. By the 18th century, the town became a focal point of the Ottoman-Habsburg wars, serving as a market town that straddled the boundary between two competing imperial powers.

The 19th century marked a period of rapid modernization under the influence of Jevrem Obrenović, who established essential institutions like a hospital, theatre, and gymnasium between 1820 and 1850. This era of growth was violently interrupted during the First World War. In 1914, the town suffered immense destruction under Austro-Hungarian occupation, with its population halved from approximately 14,000 to 7,000. Despite this, the region hosted the Battle of Cer in August 1914, which resulted in the first Allied victory of the war.

The 20th century brought further upheaval, including the horrors of World War II, where thousands of civilians were executed or imprisoned during the Axis occupation. Post-war, the city transformed into a socialist industrial hub, anchored by the Zorka chemical plant. Although the 1990s brought economic decline due to international sanctions, the city has since pivoted toward agriculture, food production, and transportation. Today, with a population of over 105,000, Šabac remains a testament to survival, having evolved from a contested fortress into a modern industrial and cultural center.
