In short: Established in 1872, the Alpini are the world's oldest active mountain infantry. Originally created to defend Italy's northern borders, these soldiers became legendary for their adaptability and resilience. From the brutal, high-altitude warfare of the Alps to deployments in Africa and China, their history is a testament to specialized mountain survival.

The Alpini were born from a 1872 proposal by Captain Giuseppe Perrucchetti, who argued that local mountain dwellers would be the most capable defenders of Italy's northern borders. By recruiting men from specific valleys and storing equipment in their home villages, the military fostered deep bonds between the soldiers and their terrain. This innovative structure allowed the force to grow rapidly, eventually organizing into specialized battalions distinguished by unique colored thread tufts on their hats.

Their most famous chapter, the 'War in snow and ice' during World War I, saw the Alpini fighting at altitudes up to 3,890 meters. Conditions were extreme, with 12 meters of snow often burying positions and avalanches claiming thousands of lives. The conflict turned into a grim engineering race, with both sides drilling tunnels into glaciers and mountain peaks to plant explosives, effectively blowing apart entire summits to dislodge the enemy. It was during this period that the Alpini's distinctive identity and many of their traditional songs were cemented.

The force faced a tragic turning point during World War II. Despite being trained exclusively for mountain combat, Alpini divisions were deployed to the plains of the Don River in the Soviet Union. Lacking the equipment to counter tanks and mechanized infantry, they suffered catastrophic losses. During the 1943 retreat, only about one-third of the Tridentina division and one-tenth of the Julia division survived the encirclement at the Battle of Nikolayevka. Today, the legacy of the 'Black feathers' continues through two remaining operational brigades, maintaining the specialized skills and the iconic green collar patches that have defined the corps for over 150 years.
