In short: In the early 1980s, the quiet town of Antelope, Oregon, faced an existential threat. Hundreds of followers of Bhagwan Shri Rajneesh flooded the area, registering to vote en masse to seize control of the local government. What followed was a bizarre chapter of political subversion, bioterrorism, and eventual collapse.

Established in 1872 as a wagon road stop, Antelope remained a small, rural community in Wasco County for over a century. This changed in 1981 when the Rajneesh movement founded a massive commune, Rajneeshpuram, on nearby land. The followers quickly recognized that by outnumbering the original residents, they could dominate the town's political machinery. Despite an attempt by locals to disincorporate the city in 1982 to prevent this takeover, the Rajneeshees secured a majority on the town council by November of that year.

The situation escalated into a dark period of local history. In 1984, the movement successfully voted to rename the city Rajneesh. Tensions peaked as the group engaged in criminal activities, including a 1984 bioterror attack where they contaminated local food with salmonella to suppress voter turnout. By 1985, the movement’s leadership crumbled following federal investigations into immigration fraud and other crimes. The leader, Bhagwan Shri Rajneesh, fled the country, and the commune dissolved shortly thereafter.

Following the collapse, the remaining residents—a mix of original locals and some former commune members—voted unanimously to restore the town's original name, Antelope, in November 1985. The property once held by the commune was eventually sold to billionaire Dennis Washington in 1991 and now operates as a youth camp. Today, Antelope persists as a small, rural settlement, recently gaining recognition as an International Dark Sky Community in 2024, far removed from the turbulent events that once threatened its identity.
