The sad-sack cartoonist persona that became a powerhouse of modern comic book storytelling
In short: Steve Murray, better known as Chip Zdarsky, built a career on a fictional alter ego—a basement-dwelling, figurine-painting failure. This satirical mask evolved into one of the industry's most prolific writers, crafting definitive runs on Batman, Daredevil, and Spider-Man while consistently winning major awards for his sharp, inventive work.
Born in 1975, Steve Murray initially established his professional identity as an illustrator and humorist for the National Post. In 2000, he invented Chip Zdarsky as a deliberate contrast to his own career—a pathetic, unsuccessful character designed to embody failure. Murray worked to keep these two identities separate, even launching a mock mayoral campaign in Toronto under the persona in 2010. Over time, however, the Zdarsky name became synonymous with his creative output in the comic book industry.
His breakthrough arrived in 2013 with the launch of Sex Criminals, a creator-owned series with Matt Fraction that earned widespread acclaim, including a Will Eisner Award for Best New Series in 2014. This success propelled him into the mainstream, leading to high-profile assignments for Marvel and DC Comics. He has since helmed significant runs on major titles, including Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man, a multi-year stint on Daredevil, and a mainline Batman series that concluded in 2025.
Zdarsky’s work is characterized by a blend of humor and narrative depth, earning him numerous accolades, including multiple Eisner and Harvey Awards. Beyond traditional publishing, he has explored digital platforms like Substack and launched his own physical newsletter, Zdarsky Comic News, which saw a distribution of 50,000 copies in its first month. His trajectory from a self-described 'sad-sack' persona to a writer shaping the legacies of iconic superheroes highlights the fluidity of creative identity in the modern comic landscape.
