In short: College of the Canyons didn't start with a permanent campus. It began in temporary quarters on a high school campus before evolving into a massive educational complex featuring a dedicated science and laboratory facility. Discover how this institution grew from a local voter initiative into a regional academic powerhouse.

Founded in 1969, College of the Canyons (COC) was established following a 1967 local voter approval. The institution's beginning period involved a shift; it first functioned within provisional spaces at William S. The campus was located in Newhall. Hart High School in Newhall. It wasn't until 1970 that the college secured a permanent site along Interstate 5, initially housing students in modular buildings while permanent structures were constructed.

The institution expanded significantly with the 2007 opening of the Canyon Country campus on a 70-acre site. This expansion included a focus on high-demand 'green' technology, with the Applied Technology Education Center scheduled to open in 2011. A major milestone in its scientific infrastructure occurred in 2021 with the opening of the Don Takeda Science Center, a 55,000 square foot facility dedicated to science and laboratory work.

Today, the college serves as a massive educational hub, offering 103 academic programs and 199 certificate programs with a faculty of 319 full-time members. It also acts as a bridge to higher education through its University Center, which hosts advanced degree programs from institutions like National University and the University of La Verne. By providing a path to California State and University of California systems, the college facilitates significant cost savings for students transitioning to four-year universities.

Beyond academics, the campus has become a cultural landmark, serving as a filming location for major productions like The Office and NCIS. Its athletic programs, the Cougars, have also achieved national prominence, including a national championship in football in 2004 and multiple state titles across various sports including golf, baseball, and track and field.
