In short: In 1970, a man-made fountain was built in the Arizona desert that reached such heights it became a world record holder. Today, it remains the tallest operating fountain in the United States, a feat of hydraulic engineering that defines the identity of an entire community.

Developed by C. V. Wood, president of McCulloch Oil, Fountain Hills was named for its centerpiece: a towering fountain built in 1970. At its peak, the fountain reached a height of 560 feet (170 m), making it the tallest in the world for over a decade. A concrete water-lily sculpture sits within a vast artificial lake, from which a massive plume emerges.

The underlying engineering of this spectacle is noteworthy. The fountain is driven by three 600 horsepower (450 kW) turbine pumps. While it can reach its maximum height under ideal conditions using all three pumps, normal operations typically utilize only two, resulting in a height of approximately 300 feet (91 m). An 18-inch (460 mm) nozzle ejects 7,000 US gallons (26,000 L) of water every minute to produce such vast proportions. The display runs for about 15 minutes every hour between 9 am and 9 pm.

Beyond its engineering, the fountain serves as a cultural anchor. The town has integrated this landmark into its heritage through events like the 'Greening of the Fountain,' a tradition dating back to 1979. The town also balances this high-visibility landmark with environmental preservation, earning an International Dark Sky Community designation in 2018. This status is maintained through specific lighting ordinances and the natural shielding provided by the McDowell Mountains, creating a rare balance between a massive man-made spectacle and the preservation of the night sky.
