The playwright who used satire to defuse a potential massacre
In short: In 1531, a devastating earthquake struck Lisbon. While friars used the disaster to incite violence against the Jewish community, one man stepped in to stop the bloodshed. Gil Vicente, a master of both theater and rhetoric, used his influence to scold the fear-mongers and protect the persecuted.
During the 1531 Lisbon Earthquake, rumors quickly spread—encouraged by the friars of Santarém—that the catastrophe was divine punishment for the Jewish community. Faced with this escalating social instability, Gil Vicente personally intervened to defuse the situation. By drafting a forceful missive to King John III, he rebuked the friars' alarmist rhetoric and allegedly prevented a slaughter of Jews and new Christian converts.
Vicente was a unique figure in the Portuguese court, serving as a master of rhetoric to King Manuel I starting in 1493. Such a role provided him with the requisite standing to mock the aristocracy and church officials without facing consequences. Produced between 1500 and 1536, his writings reconciled medieval societal hierarchies with the burgeoning humanism of the Renaissance. He was known for 'castigat ridendo mores'—criticizing customs through humor—portraying 16th-century society with sharp perceptiveness.
His literary philosophy was deeply rooted in a duality of worlds: an abstract, ideal place of serenity and a physical, 'false' world of human flaws. In his magnum opus, the Triologia das Barcas (1516–1519), he used the metaphor of ships to transport stereotypical characters—from noblemen to corrupt judges—to their eternal destinations. While he was a fierce critic of the clergy's corruption and the superficial glory of empire, he was also known as the 'Poet of the Virgin' for his profoundly religious and lyrical devotional works.
