The architecture logic that made Intel's Ice Lake chips 'deeper, wider, and smarter'
In short: How do you squeeze more power out of a shrinking transistor? For the Ice Lake mobile processors, Intel focused on architectural sophistication over raw size. By refining the Sunny Cove microarchitecture, they achieved significant performance gains through smarter branch prediction and massive parallel pipelines.
Ice Lake represents a specific milestone in Intel's "process–architecture–optimization" model. While it was manufactured using the 10 nm process (originally marketed as 10 nm+), its primary innovation lay in the Sunny Cove microarchitecture. Designed by the team in Haifa, Israel, the architecture aimed to improve single-thread performance and scalability by making the core "deeper, wider, and smarter."
The hardware achieves this through several sophisticated mechanisms. This chip was Intel's second microarchitecture to utilize the 10 nm manufacturing process. It served as a mobile-focused sibling to the Comet Lake desktop CPUs within the 10th Generation Core family.
It features a TAGE-like directional branch predictor capable of tracking a global history of 194 taken branches. For graphics, it introduced Gen11 architecture with up to 64 execution units—a significant jump from the 24 or 48 units found in previous generations. The design includes an all-new HEVC encoder and supports DisplayPort 1.4a with Stream Compression. It also features Dynamic Tuning 2.0 to maintain turbo frequencies for longer durations.
This allows for over 1 TFLOPS of compute performance and supports tile-based rendering alongside Coarse Pixel Shading. Memory and data handling also saw major upgrades. The L3 cache was quadrupled compared to Gen9.5, while a new memory controller added support for DDR4 3200 and LPDDR4X 3733. These improvements contributed to an average 18% increase in Instructions Per Clock (IPC) compared to the 2015 Skylake architecture at identical frequencies. Furthermore, it integrated specialized hardware for SHA operations, Deep Learning Boost for AI inference, and dual HEVC 10-bit encode pipelines capable of handling simultaneous 4K 60 Hz streams. For server applications, the Ice Lake-SP variant launched in April 2021 and supports up to 16 DIMMs of DDR4 memory. This configuration allows for a maximum capacity of 4 TB of system memory.
