The high-stakes tug-of-war over the architecture of your smartphone
In short: For a decade, Imagination Technologies powered the graphics in every iPhone. But when their biggest client decided to move on, it triggered a corporate drama involving multi-million dollar stake grabs, national security warnings, and a fight against state-sponsored influence.
Founded in 1985 as VideoLogic, Imagination Technologies became a cornerstone of the semiconductor world by designing PowerVR graphics processors. By 2008, the company had secured a pivotal licensing agreement with Apple Inc., which eventually accounted for more than half of its revenue. This symbiotic relationship defined the firm's trajectory until 2017, when Apple announced it would stop using Imagination’s intellectual property within its systems-on-chips within two years.
The fallout was immediate and severe. In April 2017, Imagination’s stock price plummeted by 70% following the news. The company entered a legal dispute with Apple over patent violations and confidential information while simultaneously attempting to sell off major assets like MIPS Technologies. During this period of instability, the company faced an internal 'brain drain' as Apple reportedly engineered the departure of several Imagination engineers and executives.
A £550 million purchase by Canyon Bridge Capital Partners, a private equity firm under Chinese state ownership, shifted the company's geopolitical status during 2017. This sparked intense scrutiny from the British parliament regarding potential technology transfers to state-owned enterprises. In 2020, the tension peaked when CEO Ron Black was dismissed after raising alarms about a Chinese investor's attempt to appoint four directors to the board, an action the UK government intervened to block on national security grounds.
Today, Imagination remains a vital player in GPU architecture, providing IP for cloud gaming, AIoT devices, and automotive systems. Despite the turbulence of its ownership history and the loss of its primary client, the company continues to license its PowerVR portfolio to global firms like Qualcomm and various manufacturers across Asia.
