The political trajectory of a Brooklyn councilwoman from Soviet Ukraine
In short: Inna Vernikov's journey from an immigrant child in the Ukrainian SSR to a Republican minority whip in New York City highlights a complex interplay of personal history and modern governance. Her career reflects how past experiences with communism shape contemporary views on socialism, ethics, and urban development.
Born in Chernivtsi in 1984 to Jewish parents, Vernikov immigrated to the United States at age 12. Her upbringing in the Ukrainian SSR significantly influenced her political identity; she later stated that many Jews from the former Soviet Union feel strongly that modern Democratic Party policies mirror the censorship and lack of economic opportunity they fled under communism.
After becoming an immigration and divorce lawyer, Vernikov switched from the Democratic to the Republican Party. In December 2021, she secured a spot on the New York City Council, marking the initial time a Republican held a Brooklyn district seat within that assembly since 2002. Her tenure has been marked by high-profile actions, including organizing rallies against vaccine mandates and redirecting $50,000 in funding away from CUNY Law School following their resolution on Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions.
Vernikov's career has faced scrutiny regarding ethics and personal conduct. In 2023, she was accused of violating the New York City Charter by using her official government email to solicit business for a martial arts school where she served as board chair. Additionally, she faced arrest in October 2023 for criminal possession of a firearm at a pro-Palestinian rally—charges that were later dropped after a lab report confirmed the weapon was unloaded and missing parts.
Her approach to urban planning has also sparked debate. In 2025, she pressured a developer on Coney Island Avenue to reduce an apartment building's affordable housing units from 60 to 27 while increasing parking spots from 24 to 35. She argued that the area required more parking than housing due to its proximity to transit options like the Q train and B68 bus.
