From the Lex Column to the Cabinet: The multifaceted career of Jo Johnson
In short: Before becoming a prominent figure in British politics and a peer in the House of Lords, Jo Johnson built a career in high-stakes financial journalism. His journey from investment banking to leading the Downing Street Policy Unit offers a unique perspective on the intersection of global finance and public policy.
Jo Johnson’s professional trajectory began in the private sector, where he worked as an investment banker at Deutsche Bank after completing his studies. In 1997, he transitioned into journalism, joining the Financial Times. His tenure at the publication included significant international experience, serving as the Paris correspondent from 2001 to 2005 and later as the South Asia Bureau Chief based in New Delhi until 2008. Upon returning to London, he ascended to the role of Associate Editor and Head of the Lex Column, a position widely regarded as one of the most influential in British financial journalism.
His political career commenced in 2010 when he was elected as the Conservative MP for Orpington. Johnson quickly moved into executive roles, serving as the head of the Downing Street Policy Unit starting in 2013 under Prime Minister David Cameron. Following his departure from the House of Commons in 2019, Johnson was elevated to the House of Lords in 2020. His post-government work has centered on the role of technology in education, holding chairmanships at organizations such as FutureLearn and Tes. He also maintains academic ties as a senior fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School and a President's Professorial Fellow at King's College London, continuing to bridge the gap between his background in financial analysis and his interest in the future of learning.
