From placing dishes to presiding over trials: the evolution of a royal office

In short: The Lord High Steward began as a humble household servant responsible for setting the royal table. Over centuries, this role transformed from a domestic task into a position of immense political power, eventually becoming a ceremonial ghost that only appears during the crowning of a monarch.

Originally a household officer known as a seneschal, the steward's primary duty was domestic: placing dishes on the royal table. However, much like other royal offices, the role gathered additional responsibilities and prestige over time. By the 12th century, the office of Lord High Steward became a significant political position in England, eventually becoming one of the Great Officers of State and nominally ranking above the Lord Chancellor. The office was notably tied to specific noble titles for centuries. The Earls of Leicester possessed it starting in 1153, followed by the Earls of Lancaster. A pivotal moment occurred in 1397 when John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster, used the office to strengthen his influence over the minor King Richard II. He established the tradition of keeping minutes for proceedings regarding coronation claims, creating legal precedents for the Court of Claims. He also presided over the trial of the Earl of Arundel before Parliament. Significant judicial weight defined this position; only the Lord High Steward possessed the exclusive legal right to lead peer impeachment proceedings. This judicial function remained active until 1948, when the Criminal Justice Act abolished the privilege of peers in criminal proceedings. Since 1421, following the death of Thomas of Lancaster, the office has largely remained vacant. Today, it is an ad hoc, primarily ceremonial position filled only for coronations, where the holder bears St Edward's Crown.
