The industrial heartbeat of a city built on gas and oil
In short: Mount Vernon, Ohio, serves as a primary hub for the heavy machinery that powers our modern world. From the birth of Cooper Industries to the manufacturing of massive gas compressors, the city's industrial legacy is deeply intertwined with the physics of energy generation and power distribution.
The city's industrial identity is anchored in the production of equipment for the gas and oil power generation industries. A significant industrial complex in the western part of Mount Vernon was established as the birthplace of Cooper Industries. This site was notable enough to be acquired by Rolls-Royce North America before being sold to Siemens in 2014. While Siemens eventually announced the facility's closure in 2018 due to a declining market, the site remains a landmark of heavy manufacturing. The technical lineage of the region is further evidenced by the presence of the Ariel Corporation. Ariel is a major manufacturer of reciprocating natural gas compressors, which are essential for moving and processing gases across vast distances. The company's history is inextricably linked to the local industrial scene; Jim Buchwald, one of the founders of Ariel, was originally an engineer for the Cooper Industries plant in Mount Vernon. This concentration of heavy machinery manufacturing highlights a specific economic and physical niche: the infrastructure of energy. By producing the compressors and components required for power generation, Mount Vernon has historically functioned as a mechanical backbone for the broader energy grid, transitioning from a pioneer community platted in 1805 to a center of high-stakes industrial engineering. The city's population reached 16,956 during the 2020 census. In January 1959, a massive flood caused 500 homes to be evacuated and resulted in $5 million in damages.
