How a barrel of apples birthed a century of tradition
In short: In 1907, a small delegation of students and faculty from a fledgling Kansas school broke the rules to lobby the state legislature for funding. The legislators responded with a good-natured fine: a barrel of apples. What began as a playful penalty evolved into a unique, enduring tradition that persists today.
The tradition originated at the Auxiliary Manual Training Normal School (now Pittsburg State University) during its earliest years. When the school's leadership and faculty left their classrooms to travel to Topeka to lobby for the appropriation of the first permanent building, the students seized the opportunity for a protest. They reasoned that since the faculty had missed work and class, they should be held accountable for their absence.
The students' logic was upheld when the legislators fined the delegation a barrel of apples. The students then demanded that the faculty pay the same price. To mark the inaugural 'Apple Day', school sessions ended on March 6, 1908. This initiated a distinct yearly ritual lasting more than 115 years, involving educators providing fruit to pupils.
This history reflects the university's evolution from a small normal school founded in 1903 into a diverse public institution. While the school has undergone multiple name changes—becoming Kansas State Teachers College of Pittsburg in 1923 and Kansas State College of Pittsburg in 1959—the spirit of the Apple Day tradition remains a constant. It serves as a living artifact of the school's early identity, where student-led humor and community engagement first defined the campus culture.
Beyond these traditions, the university has grown into a regional engine for science and medicine. In 2024, the university was recognized for high-level scientific research, with three faculty members appearing on the World's Top 2% of Scientists list. The institution also focuses on practical application, such as its 2024-2025 partnerships to fast-track medical and dental programs to address rural healthcare shortages.
