Researchers complete the full linear assembly of human chromosome 8
In short: Using advanced long-read sequencing, scientists have successfully mapped the entire sequence of human chromosome 8, filling in several long-standing gaps. The study resolved complex regions, including a large centromeric array and a gene cluster linked to disease risk, while revealing how these structures have changed across primate evolution.
By comparing the assembly to chimpanzee, orangutan, and macaque genomes, the researchers found that the centromere's complex structure evolved with a layered symmetry in the great ape ancestor. They also observed that mutation rates in centromeric satellite DNA are more than 2.2-fold faster than in unique genomic regions. While this provides a high-quality map of one chromosome, the findings are specific to chromosome 8.
Why it matters: A complete map of chromosome 8 reveals how repetitive genetic structures evolve and mutate rapidly.
