Why your brain's physical activity doesn't explain your internal experience

Science Still Can't Explain Consciousness...Here's Why · 33:44 · Video: Arvin Ash · Watch at the source

In short: We can map every neuron and synapse, yet we cannot pinpoint where a physical organ produces a subjective feeling. This gap between objective biology and private experience remains one of the most profound mysteries in modern science, challenging our understanding of what matter actually is.

The primary scientific hurdle is often framed as the 'hard problem' of consciousness: why do physical processes give rise to qualia, or subjective experiences? While many researchers attempt to ground consciousness in biology—pointing to specific brain regions like the claustrum as potential integration centers—this only identifies the 'where,' not the 'how.' Proponents of this view argue that consciousness is a natural phenomenon emerging from neural activity, but identifying the mechanism doesn't solve the mystery of why matter becomes aware at all. This perspective suggests that awareness might be a natural rather than supernatural occurrence. It treats consciousness as something the brain simply does through its biological functions.

To bridge this gap, some theorists look toward quantum mechanics. Physicist Roger Penrose has suggested that quantum processes might be responsible for conscious experience and free will. However, this remains highly controversial because the brain is generally considered too warm and noisy to maintain the delicate states required for quantum effects. While alternative theories like nuclear spin mechanisms have been proposed to bypass these environmental constraints, none have been experimentally confirmed to date. These theories attempt to explain how our minds function within the laws of physics. They seek to determine if the very fabric of reality is built with awareness in mind.

Beyond physics lies a fundamental epistemological limit: the problem of other minds. Because subjective experience is only accessible from the inside, science—which relies on objective observation—cannot directly measure it. This leads to the philosophical challenge of solipsism, where only one's own consciousness can be known with certainty. Until we can reconcile how mind, matter, and time fit together, consciousness remains a boundary where our current scientific methods reach their limit. This mystery forces us to consider whether consciousness is a fundamental component of cosmology. It remains an unresolved puzzle that links our internal lives to the outer universe.
